debate between mitt romney and president obama. it is the first of three presidential debates before the november 6 election. tonight's debate will focus on domestic policy, but one issue that will not be covered is the actual structure of the debate itself. the obama and romney campaigns have secretly negotiated a detailed contract that dictates many of the terms of the 2012 presidential debates. this includes who gets to participate, as well as the topics raised in the debate. now 18 pro-democracy groups are calling on the commission of presidential debates, a private corporation, to review the details of the negotiated agreement. meanwhile, libertarian nominee gary johnson has filed an antitrust lawsuit for entry into the debates against the commission on presidential debates. in addition, supporters of green party nominee jill stein plan to protest outside of the debate under the banner of occupied the cpd. jill stein and rocky anderson will appear on democracy now!'s expanding the debate exclusive tonight. we will air the obama-romney debate, pausing after questions to include e

they're, the middle class is going to be held harmless. the middle class has to understand, if romney wins this presidential election they'll be paying the bill not to reduce the deficit, not to reduce jobs, to give huge tax cuts. >> the idea of the president is not going to tell the truth, this has become the theme inside the romney camp. >> you learned and studied all this about president obama as a debater, what are you looking? >> i think he's going to say a lot of things that aren't accurate. i would be tempted to go back to that line by ronald reagan, there you go again. >> your campaign has gone overboard at times with the rhetoric, are you worried that president obama is going to have a rough night with fact check ners. >> absolutely not. we still believe that this is going to be a close race. the reason, you know, governor romney is having a rough patch here is not because what we're sieg about his plans, it's his plans. look in the mirror. people don't want to go back to the same trickle-down policies in the first recession. also, this 47 .comment, you know, i think the mess

of people forget mitt romney had 20 presidential debates under his belt in this past republican presidential primary, but barack obama, former law professor from harvard, does pretty well behind the podium. we'll know the answer about 11:00 eastern time tonight. >> you excited? >> i'm very excited. i'm up right now. it's 4:00 right now in denver. i'm not the only one up getting ready for tonight's debate. >> mark preston live for us in denver. thank you very much. >>> in tonight's debates some say you should look for quirks with candidates. to some viewers, delivery, tone, body language can be just as important as the substance of what some candidates say. when mitt romney is agitated, they say his arms apparently flail a bit. also president obama has an issue with long windedness. some debate watchers say that about him. both candidates seem to do well when they are standing behind podiums. so, i don't know, do you think it's going to be really crazy tonight? >> the super bowl of politics and happens only every four years. this is why we love it. >> a little confrontational. >>> in the next

important moment of this presidential debate. in just a few hours as you said, mitt romney, barack obama squaring off here in denver. it will be a 90-minute debate. it will cover six different segments. most of it, though, john, is going to be on the economy. there's going to be three segments to focus on the economy. one segment on foreign policy. one segment on the role of governing and one segment on the role of government in people's lives, john. so how this is going to be set up is that the candidates will be sitting at podiums. if you're looking at your tv screen, mitt romney on your left, president obama on your right. the first question tonight, john, goes to barack obama. >> well, will they have a chance to mix it up and rebutt each other in a free-flowing way. >> organizers hope to have a flee-flowing discussion. this is the kind discussion we like to see because it allows the two candidates to discuss it amongst themselves. if there are questions about each other's plans, they can directly ask each other that. we have not seen that in this campaign and we'll see it tonight. >>

presidential. i believe it's all about mitt romney. we know the president's skills at debating and talking. he's better off with a teleprompter but he's still a glib guy with a lot of substance. but what we don't know is how good mitt is. he was good against primary opponents. but this is the president of the united states and he has to make his case effectively without being too strident and basically presidential. bill: you said voters have to say maybe. >> today the election would be won by obama in a close election. but we have to shift voters to say i'll give this guy another look. i'm not going to cast my vote tomorrow. i'll look at other two debates and move forward. if he doesn't do well tonight. many of these absentee ballots will be cast and it may be too late to turn around. bill: the viewership actually went higher as the debates went along in debate number two and three. what is a win for president obama on that stage? >> that he comes off with people saying the same thing about him. i have got to give the guy a break, he inherited tough times. he has not been a bad president. he'

to be on the stage while mitt romney sounded presidential. thousand they try to make the argument that governor romney only won last night because he lied. here is the president moments ago. >> we also had our first debate last night. when i got onto the stage i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. [laughter] >> but it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts in pay for the wealthy. he said the fellow last night on stage said he didn't know anything about that. megyn: he said he wasn't going to pass any tax cuts that weren't paid for. chief white house correspondent ed henry is traveling with the president and he's live in denver. a very different sounding barack obama back in front of the teleprompter this morning. >> big time. he had the teleprompter here. he was hitting mitt romney here as you just showed. senior advisers to the president like david axelrod having conference calls this morning, doing the morning shows incision the president did not lose the deba

and governor mitt romney set to face off for the first time tomorrow at the presidential debate in denver. >> charles krauthammer talking about mitt romney's strategy on special report last night. what can romney do to come out on top? here is his take. >> romney did well in his debates. he got better he has done a lot of them. people are saying obama hasn't debated for a long time. he came out of nowhere beat the clinton machine. i think he is going to be strong. i think his one weak point is that he is thin skinned. if romney can manage to get under his skin in some way i think that actually happened in 08 one or two of the clinton debates. i think it could sort of puncture that aura as that obama had. i don't think there is any way you could be decisive. one thing that will help romney is always true of the challenger just being on the same stage as the president instantly raises your stature. i think if he can hold his own and perhaps prevail even to a minor extent he will reverse the momentum which has been rather negative. >> the first debate takes place tomorrow october 3rdrd. our

here at the university of missouri. the presidential race is shifting before our eyes and it's all about the numbers. mitt romney is working to regain ground. barack obama is pouring millions of dollars into ads to steal the deal. voters are heading to the polls in two dozen states and both sides are bracing for the unexpected, especially when it comes to the economy. and that's with less than six weeks left. if the election were held today, what would we expect, jeff? >> if the election would be held today and it is, it is a question that governor romney's campaign dismissed saying it is not being held today. i was in iowa yesterday, thousands of people have voted in almost at the end of this month, 30 states will have voted. if the election was today, president obama has command. in battleground states from nevada, up to new hampshire and down to florida in nine battle ground states, the president is in command of this race and that's not an assessment of the polls, although he has an advantage in the polls but republicans in the romney campaign as well. that doesn't mean this ra

as well as governor mitt romney. how might this impact the presidential campaign in terms of how it will relate to the first presidential debate? >> i hope that mitt romney stands strong and talks about foreign policy. because two weeks before september 11th, we heard at the dnc, you and i both did together. hey, gm is alive and osama bin laden is dead, that's not foreign policy so mitt romney has a grand opportunity to raise his poll numbers by putting obama's feet to the fire. >> there's only one candidate who politicized the death of four american heroes, you know, late at night on september 11th and he was really rebuked by many leading republicans for how, you know, just not ready for prime time he was. i think he showed his lack of depth and experience on foreign policy clearly on september 11th, but i think, you know, all of the calls and points to that this is a coverup is-- it's really laughable in a sense. i don't want to, you know, take away from the seriousness of the loss of american life, but you know, my mom always says, i look for love in all the wrong places. rep

. it is a reminder that we've never seen governor romney in a one-on-one presidential debate and it's been four years since president obama had that experience against john mccain. so they're making sure everybody will be comfortable in the hall. the candidates do their own walk-throughs tomorrow to get comfortable with thatstage. but they're doing their final debate preps and the campaign staffs are conducting their pre-debate ritual, wolffe. >> and as they go through this, they actually do, you know, actual 90-minute or so q&a sessions, real debates, they got people pretending to be others, but they actually work through what's going on. >> reporter: they do. and both of the candidates have said that they're being grilled pretty hard in these debate sessions. senator john kerry, democrat of massachusetts, he's standing in for governor romney. senator rob portman, republican of ohio who's done this for years on the republican side, he's standing in for president obama. and both president obama and romney say they're getting roughed up. the president took a break, he had a campaign event out in nevad

and the economy is set to be the topic of wednesday's presidential debate and mitt romney is going to try it tout his record at bain capital for a reason to pick him. the democrats are trying to peck up people who used to work bain capital, and a part of the election season, he was featured on a conference call with the now infamous, joe southic, a former employer of a bain company that later on claimed that mitt romney indirectly killed his wife and mitt romney deputy campaign manager stephanie cutter claemd not to remember and we also heard from mr. foster at the democrat national convention earlier this month. >> bain took over the bill, they loaded it up with millions in debt and within months, they used some of that money to millions, within a decade the debt kept growing and was so large the company was forced into bankruptcy. . >> as it turns out, mr. foster was actually regional director for the steel workers union who worked with gst steel, but not at gst steel and as there are two sides to every story. one former executive at gst steel says that what really happened when bain capital ca

and the deficit is very important for a candidate to appeal to independents. mitt romney during the presidential primary here that he won convincingly eve emphasized that a great deal and i think that helped him with indianas. we are without a sales tax and income tax. people understand here that financial decisions have consequences. i can recall in 2000 when john mccain talked about the debt and the deficit the bush campaign at the time said what is he talking about? john mccain beat george bush here by 20 minutes in that prime rare re. bush retooled his message and barely won new hampshire by talking about the debt and the deficit. gregg: kevin in 2010 the last election there, if i understand it, if i recall correctly i think republicans won almost every office, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen that way this year, the pendulum could begin to swing in the other direction? >> that's correct. we had the largest republican sweep for a legislature of any state in the country in 2010. four years earlier in 2006 the democrats took control of the legislature at all levels of power for the f

related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can make up some ground. usually, not always, but usually the challenger to the incumbent just by standing on the stage and doing a credible job, can make up so
